Oak Ridge High School will host the Tom Hayes Invitational Track Meet on Thursday, April 13, 2017. The meet, which is being coordinated through the ORHS Cross Country program, will bring together competitors from up to eight area middle schools including Robertsville and Jefferson Middle.

The meet is named in honor of longtime Robertsville Principal and well-known Oak Ridger Thomas W. Hayes, who passed away in 2015. The gymnasium at Robertsville was officially named in honor of Hayes in January, 2014.

According to RMS Athletic Director Scott Hinton, the Tom Hayes Invitational is expected to become an annual event.

“Mr. Hayes was so involved in the athletic programs at Robertsville,” Hinton said. “This is another way to honor him and continue his memory.”

The ORHS Cross Country Booster Club will run the event, which will offer middle school athletes the opportunity to compete in a high school meet atmosphere complete with the official FAT system for scoring and timing. The Booster Club will make a donation to the RMS track program in Hayes’ name. Mr. Hayes’ wife Peggy and other family members will be at the track meet to accept the presentation.

The meet was originally scheduled for April 7 but was postponed due to weather concerns.
