[Editor’s Note: Kate Trabalka served as a mentor to the Rambler staff from 8/16-12/16 as part of the ORHS YLDCIP program. Students interviewed her to write a sample profile. The two best articles are posted on the Rambler site.]

When a person’s hobby is “dance, dance, dance, and teach dance,” one can tell that she is a hardworking person. Kate Trabalka is a 17-year-old senior in Oak Ridge high school. She has always gotten straight A’s, even in middle school. She plans to major in Journalism and minor in dance. The first time Trabalka realized that she wanted to be a journalist is when she was in eighth grade, as evidenced by: “It was probably in this class when I was in eighth grade…[a visiting reporter] complimented me on the paper…I was speechless…I felt honored.” As much as she loves Journalism, she also has a passion for dance. She doesn’t just dance though, but also teaches dance to younger students. Her straight A’s and tight schedule have influenced her sister to do well, as stated here when she says: “I think I am a good influence on her because she sees me in school trying to get good grades.”

Although Trabalka is a top student, she is human and needs help with things. When she was asked about her younger sister, she said her sister had trouble with math and stated: “I think she didn’t realize that it’s okay to get help.” Later she stated that almost all Oak Ridge high schoolers go in the morning for help in math. Her high school experience up to this year has been good and although she has taken a lot of hard classes, she said that it has been worth it. She also stated that “The teachers managed to make it fun.” Trabalka is in a lot of clubs, Key Club and National Honor Society are just two of the clubs she is in. Although she is interested in all of these different things, dance is her biggest passion in life.
